Culture Clash

Some of the successes I had were that I applied my learning of placing objects in convincing positions. Also, applying my photoshop skills to create a convincing landscape collage of different images of Chinese and American culture.  A few challenges I had were finding good images for my background, and changing the lighting of some of my images to make them look convincing.  It took me a while to find good images of both cultures that would go well together, but I got enough and I think they make an interesting and convincing scene.  Also, some of my images had different lighting values, so I had to adjust a few to make them fit in with the background more.  When I finished my draft, I went over many times adding detail (making them more convincing) and moving objects around to find a good position for them so that they create an interesting scene with the background.

Holliday Spirit, Roman

As I was taking photos, I noticed the warm pellet stove.  It was heating the whole house all by itself and creating images with it's flame.  I walked over to it and took a few photos to attempt to "tame" the flame.  I think this is one of my best photos of the flame.  Also, I think I captured the flame in a good way as well.

Inspiring Artist: Marcin Jakubowski

Elliot and I did a poster project on the digital artist Marcin Jakubowski.  He does a lot of dark, futuristic type of art, along with cartoons and backgrounds.  I enjoyed researching him and think his art is really neat.

"Food" Roman

As I took this photo, I was thinking of how I could make this simple piece of pie with some mold on it interesting.  I took a few photos in different perspectives and eventually I got a good photo.  Out of all the different photos I took of different foods, this is one of the best surprisingly.  Even though this isn't too interesting of a picture, I think it's simplicity is one of the strong suits this photo has.

Out the Window Roman

My mom's friend has a dog who gives herself hotspots.  As I took these photos I found her laying on the couch with her cone on to make her stop licking the hotspot.  As she stared at me she looked so sad... and I took a photo of her.  I think I captured the feel of her well because of the look she is giving me.

Hobbies

While I was taking these photos I was thinking of what kinds of things I do.  After I got all of the things I liked to do and took some pictures of them after organizing them in a unique way, I thought about what interests me...I thought of horses, so of course I took some pictures of them.  This Photo however, I got while taking photos of things that I liked to do (my hobbies).  This includes my sneaker for exercising and playing with my pets, my phone represents music that I listen to, a book since I like to read (I also like the Author on the book), a camera case since I like to take photos, and some food because I enjoy snacks.

David Hockney Self Assessment

The scene we were trying to communicate was the Auditorium.  I think we did a good job of portraying the Auditorium, we made it look like the real Auditorium while making a few changes that make it different and unique.  One thing I learned from this project is how key perspectives are, I have known this but this project really enforced that.  I also learned that the smallest difference in shadows between photos can stand out.  Lastly, I learned that Even though you can take photos of different subjects with the same background, they still have the same kind of “essence” in them.

Creative Portraits

While I was taking this photo, I was thinking about how I could capture the movement along with implementing some interesting portrait techniques along into it.  The portrait technique I used in this photo is: Shoot Candidly.  You can see this because the subject is in action and not posing.

While I was taking this photo, I was thinking of how to use the light to help make this photo look more interesting.  I had the sun in a nice position so I took a few photos hoping to get a good one with it's light.  So, the portrait technique I used in this photo is: Experiment with lighting.  I caught the sun really well in this photo to create a lens flare and pull the attention from the subject to the light.

DAVID HOCKNEY COLLAGES

When did the Cubist Period occur? Who is credited with this style? What are aspects featured of the Cubist Artwork?
-The Cubist period began in 1907 when Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque began collaborating to create a new and different type of painting that flattened the painting.  That was when the foundation for Cubism started.  In Cubist art, the artist flattens space and uses a variety of color (and/ or compositions) to express his subject in a creative manner along with different types of shapes and colors.

Who is David Hockney? What kind of work does/has he done? What Cubist features do you notice in David Hockney's work? Where and how might he have been influenced by the cubist period?
-David Hockney is one of the founders of Pop Art. After he moved to L.A. he moved away from Pop Art and used a kind of Naturalistic style. I think that there are some resemblances of Cubism in his work with the flat-type style of painting. He took on aspects from the Cubist period but retained his style along with it like what he did with his Pop Art style.

Cumberland Fair

Landscape Mode

Macro Mode
While taking this photo I considered: In what way could I make the subject as interesting as possible with or without the background.  Along with attempting to capture the "essence" of the Fair as well.

Famous Portraits

Experiment with Lighting
-Use light in different ways to create interest on or in your subject.
Play with Eye Contact
-Have your subject's eyes going somewhere besides right into the lens and use that attention to your advantage.
Shoot Candidly
-Shoot your subject in action not posing; get them moving naturally.
Focus Upon One Body Part – Get Close Up
-Create interest not just in the face of the subject but in their body as well.
Obscure Part of your Subject
--Not giving all of your subject's information (body) ignites the viewers imagination and gets them thinking about your photo.

James kimberlin (1980)

courtesy the kunstmuseum-wolfsburg
-I chose this image because it was one of the photos that caught my interest.  It does this based on Richard's style of posing the subject in an interesting manner, such as a head tilt and a relaxed body pose.

Yasuo Kuniyoshi, New York, NY, 1941
Arnold Newman
-The reason I picked this photo from Newman's collection is because I like how he implemented the interest in this portrait.  I like how he has the subject in a relaxed pose with the duck on the table and the grapes balancing out the portrait.

Annie Leibovitz
-I chose this photo out of Leibovitz's collection because of mainly how this portrait is organized.  I find interest going towards the figure on the right because of the way he is facing; but also to the figure on the left because of the knife throwing.  I also find the background interesting because you would expect circus acts like knife throwing to be in a nice area.

Signs of Fall

I chose this photo as my favorite out of all my Signs of Fall photos because it represents the theme of the assignment.  This photo does that because this is a picture of flowers and when you think of Fall you usually think of flowers.  Plus, it has a few compositional strategies like repetition of elements and background included to make it a better photo.
